After taking the advice of Surfer as-is, such as their recommended LSI keywords, such as organic composting and permaculture design, the post made it to the first page in six weeks. Without the post I wrote on control? After four months still languoring on page three.
The catch? If you are not careful, Surfer will sometimes lead you to keyword stuffing. I have learned to get around 70-85 percent of their desired score and not 100, this makes the writing sound natural.

PageOptimizer Pro (POP) is a bit coarse compared to the rest but incredibly useful to anyone with a more constrained budget. It also gives on page advice such as the best location of key words in certain HTML tags. I like its NLP term proposals especially because they enable you to recapiturally add semantic keywords Google links with your subject.
Fast Hours-Saving Technical SEO Tools.

Technical audits on Screaming Frog are impossible to beat. Yes, the interface was built in 2005, but this spider will be crawling all over your site uncovering broken links, duplicates, missing meta descriptions, and optimization issues in images. I do a complete crawl of the client sites once every month and I have never missed issues that could have taken hours to locate through manual means.
Last month, it found 47 orphaned pages on a client site- valuable content with no internal links pointing to it. These pages alone in their navigation and other pertinent blog posts increased their organic traffic by 12%.
The Site Audit by Ahrefs does the same but has more beautiful dashboards and is better organized. The health score provides clients with a simple-to-interpret measure, but I never stress that clients should have a 100% score, which is not achievable or realistic. They rank their suggestions in order of impact, and this comes in handy when you are limited in your development resources.
The Schema Markup Question
The implementation of structured data imposed the hand-coding of JSON-LD, which creators of most content wisely evaded. This has been democratized by Schema App and Merkle with their Schema Markup Generator. I add FAQ schema, product schema and article markup without writing code with these.
Depending on the industry, the effect is different. A client of theirs, a local bakery, was able to have schema of their recipe pages featured within weeks of the schema addition. In the meantime, structured data did not show much outward influence on a B2B software business. It is worth trying as it is explicitly used by Google, yet do not count on miracles.
The Cost-Benefit Reality
The majority of full-fledged tools cost between $50-200 a month. This is a no-brainer to agencies or serious content marketers. When you have a small blog, free Ubersuggest or restricted crawls by Screaming Frog may be enough to start with.
I usually suggest beginning with one content optimization tool (Surfer or Clearscope) and one technical crawler (The free version of Screaming Frog or Ahrefs), and adding more as you get ROI.

I have optimized hundreds of websites but I believe that on-page SEO tools are now necessary and no longer optional. All search engines are too competitive and complex to optimize manually at a large scale. But, they are amplifiers of strategy, not substitutes of it.
The websites that take the first position in search engines are both optimized through tools and the real knowledge, research and information that are used by people. Use these sources to get the boring technical stuff done and get on with creating something that is worthy of ranking.
